Jersey City home decor storeowner picked to judge HGTV show
When HGTV, the Home and Garden cable channel, was looking for a local designer to be a judge on an episode of its newest television series, it turned to Jersey City shop owner Kristen Scalia.
"It was definitely a dream" said Scalia, owner of Kanibal Home on Montgomery Street. "Being in the home décor business, anything with HGTV is like the holy grail."
Scalia served as a judge for "Battle On the Block," a show that gives three families three days to renovate a room in their home.A panel of three judges picks their favorite makeover and the winner walks away with $10,000.
While HGTV isn't releasing the identities of the families just yet, a spokesperson confirmed that the show filmed an episode in the Hamilton Park section of Jersey City in early April.
The show, which airs on HGTV Saturdays at 10 p.m., debuted April 10.
On the HGTV website, the episode featuring the three Jersey City brownstone owners and Scalia will air May 29 at 10 p.m. and be repeated on June 4 at 11 p.m. and June 5 at 5 p.m.
The first season includes episodes shot in New York, Florida and New Jersey. Aside from Jersey City, families from Eatontown and West Orange also "battle" it out on the show this season.
Scalia got to meet host and famous designer Genevieve Gorder.
"Genevieve was as pretty as she looks on TV and probably sweeter than she seems on TV," she said.
Scalia said the Jersey City show was shot in three Hamilton Park brownstones and each family redesigned their living room.
She said judging wasn't easy. It involved praising and criticizing the families' hard work. But she said everyone "hugged it out" in the end.
A perk to being on the show - Gorder plugs Scalia's shop.
"If it helps business, that's a bonus," said Scalia who is celebrating the store's first anniversary May 15.
