Mom, I'm On TV!

Sometimes I wish I had just a little bit more time. OK, that's a big fat lie. I always wish I had more time. Time to think. Time to do. Time to relax and be creative. To create. To roam. To navigate.

Well this past Monday I was granted my wish and had the time of my life.

HGTV called me a few months ago to participate in a new show they're previewing this Saturday called Battle on the Block. The Jersey City episode is the last one of the season so it should be airing in May or June, but -- until I walked onto the trailer parked in Hamilton Park this Monday -- I didn't really believe that I would be on TV.

And it was amazing.

The premise of the show is that they pit three families against one another to renovate one room in three days. Outside judges are brought in on the last day to critique the rooms and then the winning family is awarded $10,000. Design Star's Genevieve Gorder is the host and she guides the families through the redecorating and remodeling phases.

Of course reality TV can't only be made up of comments like "Oh, that's so cute!", so I'm interested to see how the episode is cut. There were a lot of funny comments and some questionable design choices, but these Hamilton Park families really worked hard (and they all had kids!) and revamped a living room space. Each one shone for a different reason.

So March has in no way been a bad month for Kanibal Home. I had the fantastic opportunity to write a Jersey City design guide for Design*Sponge, the shop was nominated four times in New Jersey Monthly's "Best Of" poll and I'm going to start blogging regularly for NJ.com's Business 101 section. Not too shabby.

Personally, I joined a writing group with one of my best friend's from high school so I can finally get that pesky novel finished (fingers crossed). My apartment may be a little dirtier than normal and I may be paging through my Filofax nervously trying to figure out what I'm forgetting (grocery shopping), but I'm excited. Winter was such a dark, dormant season that I'm really looking forward to all the opportunities that seem to be blossoming this spring.

And if you're wondering who won that $10,000 prize ... well, you'll just have to wait and see when the Jersey City episode of Battle on the Block airs.
