About Town: Preview Dinner at Satis

It's a little weird that all of my favorite things in life begin with the letter "F": Fashion, furniture and food. It's also convenient that my new favorite Jersey City restaurant satisfies all three of those passions simultaneously.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to score a table at Satis for friends and family night. Start to finish this bistro, cafe and gelateria accomplishes what so many other Jersey City establishments hope to attain -- food, decor and customer service that not only play well together, but that are actually harmonious.

For those of you who are as equally obsessed with new restaurants in Jersey City, here's my overview:

(Fun fact: The chef of Satis used to work at Ox ... I know, I know some of you must be shedding a joyful tear right now. I did too. That's partially why I'm so excited by the introduction of this new restaurant. Although Jersey City has several amazing eateries, I personally think a huge void was left when Ox closed. That's not the case anymore, though.)

DECOR
Okay, I'm obviously biased here because they did a great job of decorating Satis in a vintage, yet modern vibe. Large pillows on benches, Edison light bulbs dangling from the ceiling, velvet drapes and white railroad tiles adorn the main room. An amazing peacock wallpaper hangs in the balcony section and the sweet shop has the palest of yellow walls.

FOOD
Good food isn't just about the ingredients. It's about the love too. For example, what makes your dad's pork chops so tasty? And grandma's pumpkin pie so much better than a diner's? That little extra something-something that isn't necessarily in the seasoning or the sauce. And you can tell the chef at Satis has a passion for his craft. Each dish tastes like a home-cooked meal, except elevated and with a complexity an amateur  wouldn't be able to coax out of everyday ingredients.

I was at the table with three other women and each of the following plates were (somewhat embarrassingly) licked clean:

(Meat and cheese board: A prosciutto that melted in your mouth was the standout here)

(Winter squash tarte tatin)

(Chickpea panisse)

(Bacon wrapped, cabrales stuffed dates)

(A pate so delicious I was digging out the tiny bits that got left behind in the mustard)

(Chorizo, kale and potato steamed manilla clams)

(Veal milanese)

(Olive oil poached tuna with roasted tomato and caramelized fennel)

(I'm adding this to my Christmas list. Braised short ribs with chorizo and goat cheese mashed potatoes. I think I commented that I wanted to wear this dish. It was ridiculously good.)

(Everyone else stopped eating ... but I'm not a quitter.)

And there's more ... however one thing that's missing in the sweet foods photos is possibly the most amazing: a German chocolate concoction that left me speechless.

OVERALL THOUGHTS
I've said it once and I'll say it again: I'm a little slutty when it comes to eating around town. But Satis may make an honest woman out of me.

Don't forget, this Friday is the downtown Holiday Sidewalk Fair. In connection with JC Fridays, Kanibal Home will have a table out in front of the shop with locally-made gifts. The city will also be providing live music, free hot cider and stiltwalkers. So come on out, enjoy downtown and shop local!

The Insiders Guide

Having to limit myself to just ten was no easy task, but if you are in the mood for quirky, homemade, trendy, sporty, vintage or just plain fun these stores might have something for you. Down in Exchange Place you will find the perfect gift for the romantic at heart. Looking for a bit of holiday glamour, look no further! Deen carries a unique mix of designer labels as well as up and coming talent, with fashions for both men and women. You will find premium denim, tees, totes and accessories all uniquely styled, home décor selections as well as pet goods.
For the holidays, Kanibal Home is offering card making and other crafting classes to help you send warm wishes to your family and friends. Most of the store is filled with one-of-a-kind objects, home furnishings, vintage dishware, and found objects. They also offer jewelry and eco-friendly apparel, a place where history meets glam. Kanibal’s motto: Pretty things make life beautiful.
Need to bundle up for the cold weather…head to Tia’s Place for all of your outerwear needs. Sorry gentlemen, this one is for ladies only. For the fashionista on your list you will find a fabulous selection of coats, gloves, hats, sweaters and boots. At Tia’s Place you will find great prices, key pieces, original antiques, jewelry, candles and home décor.
Roasting chestnuts on an open fire this season? For that It’s a Wonderful Life look, head over to Another Man’s Treasure, where you will find plenty of classic Harris Tweed blazers, fedoras, and trench coats. Stock up on Pendleton and Woolrich shirts and keep Jack Frost from nipping at your nose.
Jingle all the way this year with beads and bangles from Tarina Tarantino’s “Midnight Circus” collection at  Vivi Girl! Stuff your stockings with tiny whimsical treasures. If handmade for the holidays is your niche, then head straight for The Stockinette, where you will find a mixture of fibers, fine art, and fabulous treats. If you are a quick study, knitting and crochet classes are available and there’s a modest selection of quality yarns, various needles, notions, and pattern books. This holiday make something special for your special someone.
Looking to show your Jersey City pride, well Nine Lives Skate Shop has great Jersey City logo tees, hoodies, and paraphernalia. This skate shops offers a walls of colorful graphic boards, accessories and has plenty of street fashion.

Entertain in style this season with vintage stemware and brass candlesticks from Smith & Chang’s General Store. This whimsical shop takes a general store approach, adds an eco twist, and tosses in a vintage vibe...featuring quality goods that are essential to an everyday life.

Although I'm a little late with this post, I still think it's a timely reminder that Jersey City is home to an amazing array of talented artists. And I'm lucky enough to be able to use Kanibal Home as a platform to support and collaborate with some of these individuals who I not only admire, but now count as friends.

Just a side note to friends and family -- I personally did my holiday shopping at all of the above tables!
