Curiosity Cabinet

It's been a long time coming. I tried to hold myself back. And then there just wasn't the right space. But -- lo and behold -- a china cabinet came into my possession and I couldn't restrain myself any longer.

That said, I'm happy to introduce a newly designed corner of Kanibal Home. Now home to our very own cabinet of curiosities (just in time for the holidays too)!

(Look at that smirk! We love quirky taxidermy.)

(Top shelf items include everything from vintage bottles to butterflies, shark jaws and fish fossils.)

(The middle shelf houses a mix of vintage cameras and skulls.)

(Estate jewelry is highlighted by a turtle skeleton.)

(Oh hey, it's a white rat.)

(Rare turtle skeletons framed in a double glass box.)

New Items in the Shop: Holiday Edition

We've been getting so many new items in the shop over here at Kanibal Home that I haven't been able to keep up with photographing the new wares before they disappear. So here's a Saturday post with an overview of what's available right now. Enjoy!

(New party dresses arriving in the shop weekly!)

(A slew of vintage and new dishware just arrived in the shop, including these purple goblets.)

(Nightingale Projects dropped off some handmade kitchen towels and napkin sets.)

(Something for the home cook on your list? Cheese knives, handmade napkins and cute cutting boards.)

(For the crafty lady on your list: Handmade ornaments, note card sets and gift tags.)

(For the world traveler: Give them the world on a string.)

(Vintage piano stool with seat storage.)

(The wall of curiosities. Books - vintage and new - sit under saws, antlers and a vintage chopper.)

(For the boys: Nostalgic game sets, a book on beer, vintage cameras and drinking mugs.)

(KH just got in a shipment of books for the interior design, cooking or craft enthusiast on your list.)

(These are great - vintage library chairs from Princeton University. And we have 6 in stock!)

(I almost stole this for myself: Vintage framed United States map.)

(I need to make room on the walls for this vintage taxidermy -- a buck with a snarl. Right now he's hiding in the back.)

(A new cabinet of treasures is being added to the shop in the next day or so. In it will be these vintage jewels.)

Shop Late, Shop Local: Every Thursday Until 10pm!

One day in the shop I was talking to a budding entrepreneur who was trying to get her event planning business established. I said, "As a small business owner you can interact with a lot of people every day but still remain extremely isolated. It's important to get out, network and brainstorm with peers. Don't be afraid to give up control and collaborate."

So when Meika and Warren from Another Man's Treasure popped into Kanibal Home at the end of November I decided to take my own advice. Meika and I have a history of trading shop talk, so it was no big surprise when our conversation strayed to the upcoming holiday season. How were we individually going to encourage local shopping? We already direct customers back and forth between our two shops, but what more could we do? How would we help drive shopping traffic to some of the other local shops as well?

And that's when Shop Late, Shop Local was born. Over the last few years, downtown Jersey City has seen the arrival of many great retail establishments. The mission of Shop Late, Shop Local is to spread the word about these businesses and encourage the flow of foot traffic among our growing shopping community.

Every Thursday during the month of December, participating businesses will extend operating hours until 10pm and offer customers an additional incentive. Following is a list of participating businesses:

WTF of the Week: Walk of Shame PSA

Ladies, tis the season for cute dresses, late nights and one too many seasonal drinks. The "WTF of the Week" blog post reminds us to be careful when selecting our holiday outfits -- because the mesh cutouts, short hemlines and sequins of evening wear can take on a whole new appearance when faced with sunlight and the morning commute. Watch the following PSA and remember: This holiday season let's pick our outfits better than we pick our men.

Yoga Class at Kanibal Home - Wednesday at 7:30pm

It's officially the holiday season and -- in between the sweets and stress -- it's nice to take a moment to focus and relax. That's why we invited Michelle from Michelle Timek Yoga into the shop for a very special vinyasa flow yoga class.

This Wednesday (12/7) at 7:30pm please join us at Kanibal Home for an intimate yoga class. The lesson is $15 and -- like all of the classes taught in the shop -- 100% of the cost goes to the local artist/instructor. Note: bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing.

Space is limited, so please RSVP to kristen (at) kanibalhome.com to reserve a spot if you are interested in participating.
