And we're off ...

See you in a week! Kanibal Home will be on hiatus this week, reopening next Saturday, August 8th!

By the way, a BIG thank you to Kim and Patrick for popping by for this morning's BBC interview -- the segment will air in September. Hopefully they'll feature a little shout out to Oh My Vintage!

BBC is coming to film a segment at Kanibal Home this Friday, so if anyone is around at noon on 7/31 come by the shop!

Out of "Office" Reply

From Saturday(August 1) to Friday (August 7) Kanibal Home will be closed. I'll be spending the week traveling and hunting down some new found objects for the shop.

So that means if you want a Kanibal fix, have any questions and need to pick something up or drop something off please stop on by this upcoming week.

I'll miss being in the shop and seeing everyone, but I promise the week off will be worth it. It's still summer, but I have so much planned for Fall I can hardly wait!

By the way, all our new women's tees and maxi dresses, kids clothes and men's apparel are in the shop.

Store Makeover

Having a store allows me one great, overriding, stupendous benefit: Freedom. Mostly the freedom to change things around whenever I want.

Although I'm working hard at updating the store's online site (it had to play second fiddle while I was getting the storefront ready), a lot of the design is out of my hands. I may orchestrate the vision, but the implementation is left to someone else. Someone talented enough to wade through programming rules and coding.

But with a physical location I have the opportunity and freedom to arrange and rearrange the store as new products come in to give everything a more purposeful feeling. Kanibal Home gets new products in every week and I like to change the store slightly each time. Although we have a lot of products, the main point I try to communicate is that modern and vintage, new and old can all create a cohesive living environment. Someplace that's comfortable, warm and -- above all -- feels like home.

And (as we mentioned in Tuesday's post) this week's crazy shipments brought about some big changes.

(Finally finished the antique vanity in the back of the store. It now serves as a display for some vintage shoes, scarves and bangle bracelets brought in by Kim at Oh My Vintage)

(Kanibal Home's new men's section: Kanibal Home tees and a mix of vintage and new jackets. Great vintage designer ties as well brought in by Kim's boyfriend Patrick. They could possibly be the nicest, cutest couple in the entire world. Seriously.)

(One of the many maxi dresses that just arrived in the shop.)

(Vintage lunch box. If it doesn't sell this week I may have to buy it. I learned my lesson from last time with that Swallow and the Swift necklace. I still dream about that bug.)

(Table of treasures. New Flamingo Tee in organic cotton with a Oh My Vintage purse on top of a stack of vintage etiquette books.)

Kids Corner

Sometimes it feels like Kanibal Home is growing up so fast. One day it was just an internet startup, the next it was a little storefront with just women's apparel and home goods and now -- just two months after opening our brick and mortar location -- we're a full lifestyle brand. One of the new offerings I'm most excited about is the kids apparel: onesies and toddler tees. Done right and not too cute and cuddly (although the onesies are organic cotton).

Our very popular beaded bracelets are also back in stock ... with some new additions as well.

Come by and check it out!

Oh Hello

Hmm, a little more fun than I wanted to have on a Thursday morning, but it livens up the week!

What am I talking about? Oh, that lovely cop car crash into my neighbor's store that caused the whole wall to shift over into our doorway.

As long as no one was hurt, I find it just another amusing addition to Kanibal Home's history. My neighbor (the owner of the convenience store) is very sweet -- and ridiculously calm -- and he seems to be an old salt at these activities.

And, I have to say, this surprise definitely woke me up fast this morning!

Oh well, on with the week ...

Tee'd Off

The first round of kids clothes has arrived at Kanibal Home! In addition to the below (seriously, how cute?) I also got in two adorable blankets. Combined with the vintage-inspired bibs we have in stock, these items make a perfect little gift.

The above tees come in 2T, 3T and 4T sizes. Onesies and additional tee sizes will be arriving any day now as well!

Early Closing

Just a note that Kanibal Home will be closing early today (Saturday, July 11) at 5:00pm. The store will resume normal operating hours tomorrow morning.

Thanks and have a lovely weekend!

Take a Seat

Woohoo, new chairs in the shop! Kanibal Home started out as an online shop where I reupholstered vintage chairs with new, funky fabric and every time a new chair comes into the shop it makes me incredibly happy.

I've used this green houndstooth fabric in the past on a bench seat, but it looks really remarkable on this vintage cane chair. Wouldn't this make an incredible side chair in a bedroom or punchy office chair?

(Vintage Houndstooth Chair)

The above white chair is for a vanity I've been working on. The chair is done, but the vanity needs a bit more work. Once it's done, though ... watch out. It's not going to last long.

The Outdoors Come Inside

It's Log, Log, it's big, it's heavy, it's wood. It's Log, Log, it's better than bad, it's wood!

Kobo Candles

For those looking for the Kobo Candles in Green Pearl Jasmine and White Birch Rosemary ... they're in!

Sweet Sunny Summer

Although I've been doing a ton of buying for fall (think lots of bright colored jackets, slouchy bags and soft knits), it's still obviously summer. Actually, I don't feel like we've been able to fully enjoy summer yet due to all the rainy weather we got hit with a few weeks ago.

So, I'm not giving up on the summer dress quite yet. We just got a couple new styles in the shop and we're getting even more mid-July. I don't know about you, but I'm ready for some balmy nights and midday BBQs.

Cruise Control

One of Kanibal Home's first window displays featured a vintage kid's Schwinn bike. As soon as the bike came out of the window and was for sale the sweetest woman popped in and bought it for her young daughter.

So I thought I would bring in another classic. The below Schwinn Suburban is in excellent condition and has the vintage wire baskets already mounted on the back. This is definitely not the bike for someone who lives on a fourth floor walk-up, but it sure will turn heads.

(The wire baskets on the back extend out and then clip flat as they're shown in this picture)

New Vintage and Handmade Goods!

What better way to support your local community than to shop where their goods are showcased? Right now we have vintage bags and jewelry from Kim at Oh My Vintage! and some great crochet headbands and pins from artist Sofia Tome.

The best part? Awesome price points on some serious one-of-a-kind items.

(Crochet hair pins from Sofia Tome -- at $4.50 each they are a steal!)

(Sofia Tome's hairbands float ... giving the illusion that you have two flower blossoms perfectly positioned in your hair)

Hard Times

In honor of Independence Day, I'd like to list a couple things that challenge my personal independence.

1. Lighters - I have a severe problem using just my thumb to create fire.

2. Geography - New Guinea, Austria, Zimbabwe ... these are all places to me that can be described as up, down or to the left of New Jersey. Similar to driving, where street names are not used, but big trees on the corner are great directional markers. Continents are irrelevant, like middle names -- it's more sentimental than practical in my opinion.

3. Cross town subways - Similar to the above, if it's not up or down, I'm confused. F, V, B, D trains: I can tell you every stop. Numbered trains: I'm taking a taxi.

4. Spam - If it's not cranberry sauce, a food item shouldn't have can marks. The fact that Spam is meat bothers me even more.

5. Stick shifts - If the only cars in the world were manual, I would be riding my bike a lot more.

That's not it, but I think that's enough information to illustrate I'm both uncoordinated and directionally challenged. So, on that note, have an amazing Fourth of July weekend!
