Swallow and the Swift

Laura from Swallow and the Swift, a local Jersey City jewelry designer, just dropped off some beautiful pieces and I'm so excited. Mainly because of selfish reasons -- number one: because all of her jewelry designs are composite pieces made up of found objects and vintage treasures; number two: I am SERIOUSLY loving this vintage gold plated cicada charm necklace and really want to buy it for myself. Is it bad that I buy my own inventory?

Sorry Laura, I may be stealing/buying this bug necklace before it's released to the public. And the best part of Swallow and the Swift's designs? All her pieces are under $30.

New Products

If you've shopped at the store, you know we get product in pretty much weekly ... and it flies out of the store. So, as an early update, we'll be getting these rad (and super appropriate) posters in the shop in the next week. Come check them out.

Last Friday Kanibal Home hosted its opening party and received a warm welcoming from old and new friends and family. We're loving our new location at 213 Montgomery Street and all the locals that pop in to say hello on a daily basis!

Window Watching: Summer Opening

KH has a home!

OK, big news. We've been a bit MIA lately because we have been hard at work preparing for our new store opening. That's right, Kanibal Home will now have a brick-and-mortar storefront at 213 Montgomery Street. 

Some recaps from the past few weeks:

1. Finding out that the ideal location was becoming available -- and running into the landlord's office waiving a check without even seeing the space in its entirety.

2. Watching the internet and phone technicians climb through a back window and punch a hole through the tin ceiling "by mistake".

3. Realizing that 150 year old tile floors don't really ever look clean no matter how hard you scrub at 11:00pm on a Friday.

4. Using every trick in the book to try and get the awning permit hurried along.

5. Sitting in a quiet store entering inventory into a new POS system ... and realizing this is what I have been working so hard to accomplish.

Inspiration 101

A lot of people talk about inspiration, muses, finding your creative core, etc. However, not a lot of people talk about those "aha!" moments when paging through magazines, riding on the subway or mindlessly talking with friends. Sure, I can find inspiration for new tees and website design from visiting a museum or doing research, but I also just as easily find myself solving problems and brainstorming on the subway.

The problem with that? You aren't ready for the creative juices to start flowing so half the time you get off the subway, start or end your day, get confronted by something else and by the time you do have a moment to brainstorm again ... what was I saying?

Exactly. The thought is gone. 

So years ago I realized I needed a place to keep all those thoughts -- some I could use now, some that would be utilized in the future. I picked up a black, blank bound journal at Barnes & Noble and started being diligent about pasting down items in magazines I found interested, scribbling notes about window displays or new products.

So, re: the title of this post, if you've said to yourself "What was that idea I had?" grab a bound book and start scrap booking.

And what often happens is I page through my inspiration book and find something that I had written down days or weeks or years ago ... and it inspires me to jot down additional thoughts or create something new.
