Listen up, this is a cute story. I'm not all unicorns and bubbles and baby kittens, but when Nicole from Nightingale Projects told me the tale behind their Love Notes .... well okay, I swooned a little.

Before they were even married, Adam (the other half of Nightingale) surprised Nicole with a series of love notes spread out around the apartment. They looked exactly like the below and said all the adorable romantic comedy phrases that a lady wants to hear (but will never admit).

Nicole found these little custom cards on her pillow, propped up against her toothbrush, inside her wallet and between the screen and keyboard of her laptop. Adorable, right?

So this Valentine's day pop by Kanibal Home and pick up a pre-printed pack of love notes to surprise your loved one. Each pack comes with a variety of sayings from a simple "I love you" to an endearing "I believe in you."

Taxidermy

If you've stepped into Kanibal Home lately, you've noticed the shop's growing collection of taxidermy. We have a deer head, a few skeletons and fossils and a collection of rats and rodents for sale. We also have these guys for customers who want to add a little cuteness to their taxidermy collection:

In addition to the ducklings we currently have in stock, we will also be adding red squirrels and chipmunks to the cuteness collection of taxidermy. Keep an eye out for those items in late February.

And for you animal lovers out there, don't worry I'm not murdering baby animals for decor purposes. Kanibal Home has partnered with a small, family-owned taxidermy shop to source all of the shop's new pieces. These animals died naturally (we have the paperwork to prove it) and we're continuing our mission to connect and work with small businesses to bring curiosities into the store.

There's been a lot of talk lately about supporting small business and shopping local. This holiday season was a true testament to the power of the people to hurt or help. Speaking with my fellow small business owners in Jersey City, I think we were all pleasantly surprised by the outpouring of residents who really made an effort this year to spend their dollars locally. As small business owners, it always goes without saying that we love what we do and where we do business ... so thank you for helping us (and especially Kanibal Home) continue our mission to serve the Jersey City community.

That said, before the work week creeps up on all of us and 2012 responsibilities kick into full gear, please take a moment and continue to show your appreciation for small business. Shop Late, Shop Local: Every Thursday Until 10pm!

One day in the shop I was talking to a budding entrepreneur who was trying to get her event planning business established. I said, "As a small business owner you can interact with a lot of people every day but still remain extremely isolated. It's important to get out, network and brainstorm with peers. Don't be afraid to give up control and collaborate."

So when Meika and Warren from Another Man's Treasure popped into Kanibal Home at the end of November I decided to take my own advice. Meika and I have a history of trading shop talk, so it was no big surprise when our conversation strayed to the upcoming holiday season. How were we individually going to encourage local shopping? We already direct customers back and forth between our two shops, but what more could we do? How would we help drive shopping traffic to some of the other local shops as well?

And that's when Shop Late, Shop Local was born. Over the last few years, downtown Jersey City has seen the arrival of many great retail establishments. The mission of Shop Late, Shop Local is to spread the word about these businesses and encourage the flow of foot traffic among our growing shopping community.

Every Thursday during the month of December, participating businesses will extend operating hours until 10pm and offer customers an additional incentive. Following is a list of participating businesses:

Working at Kanibal Home has lots of apparent and not-so-apparent bonuses. One of the best surprises I receive are the people I meet in the shop. The quality and character of each individual is astounding and I'm always inspired by their creativity, motivation and passion.

Everyone knows about the craziness of Black Friday where consumers gobble down Thanksgiving to go and wait in line at big box retailers. But -- hey! -- what about the little guys? What about the mom-and-pop stores where the salespeople play with your kids while you shop and ask you (genuinely) how your day is going? Do you remember how excited Pee-wee Herman used to get when he got mail? That's pretty much what goes on over here at Kanibal Home. So you can kind of put into perspective how giddy I got when the following images arrived in our inbox this morning.

Umm, did one of our customers seriously spell out our name with kitchen utensils? I know, I know. It's the creepiest, coolest thing you have ever seen. I'm still smiling.

With a little rearranging I was able to squeeze this beauty into the shop today. I'm pretty picky when it comes to dressers, but when I saw this lovely piece I instantly fell in love. But, seriously, what's not to love? Flower drawer pulls, mustard colored paint, and a matching mirror .... just divine.

Halloween Happenings

Kiddies, what are you doing this weekend? As you can probably guess, the ladies of Kanibal Home are pretty into Halloween. Personally, I used to go all out and craft these fantastic getups but with the shop (blah, blah adult stuff) and all I can't devote as much time as I would like to primping and pampering for one goolish evening.

But that's why you have friends, right? I've already asked (*cough, cough* bribed with food + alcohol) Rachael to curl my hair and scheduled an appointment with the amazing Shana from MakeupbySha. It my take a small team of professionals, but I have faith that these ladies can get me in the Halloween spirit. Here's a peak at what I have planned:

I know, not a HUGE stretch of the imagination if you know me at all. But make sure to say hi if you see me out and about on Saturday night. In other going out news, the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cove Cemetery is putting on its Ghost of Uncle Joe's Halloween Benefit from 5:00 to 10:00pm this Saturday. And both the Lamp Post and Lucky 7 Tavern are having Halloween-themed events if you're doing the bar thing.

And, if you REALLY want to know what I'm doing after work this weekend (TMI alert), I'll be catching a show at the Landmark Loews Theater. Probably Friday (say, if you wanted to bring me out on a date).

And that's our Halloween roundup. There are ton of other activities going on around town, so if you find something noteworthy send over an email or leave a mention as a comment.

Craft Class: Textile Stamping

Kanibal Home is thrilled to welcome back Jersey City artist Daniella Lekach -- she'll be teaching a class on textile stamping this upcoming Thursday (10/20) at 7:30pm.

With the holidays around the corner, Daniella will be demonstrating how to create custom stamps that can then be used to make a multitude of gifts, including Furoshiki gift wrap and one-of-a-kind handkerchiefs.

Cost is $25 cash and includes the lesson, all materials and refreshments. 100% of the price of the class goes to the local instructor.

WTF of the Week: Squirrel Attack

Obviously I think very highly of Kanibal Home. However, it seems Jersey City's woodland creatures do too.

A few days ago my friend and neighbor (cough, stalker) Beth popped by the shop to chat. I was showing her the new skull-themed book that came into the store when I caught her looking behind me, wide-eyed.

ME (oblivious): The book's awesome, right?!
*Silence and staring*
ME: Right?
BETH: Dude, there's a squirrel behind you.

And I couldn't even believe it, but there was a squirrel just chilling in the dressing room. Looking at us like it was thinking, Yea that book is pretty awesome.

Being the incredibly resourceful shop owner that I am, I immediately took action.

Which means I grabbed my camera and started laughing hysterically.

You can see the terror on Beth's face as she hides behind the table. And look at that little rascal perched on the mirror like he/she is reclining on a chaise lounge. Ridiculous. If Beth wasn't in the shop I would have been milling about behind the front desk and never would have seen this freeloader.

Well that was fun for about five minutes. And then, as customers started shopping in the store, we realized the squirrel couldn't stay in the dressing room forever. Bummer.

ME: Beth, how are you going to get the squirrel out?
BETH: Oh hells no. I'm leaving.
ME: No you're not!

So a plan formed. It might not have been the best -- and we might have screamed at one point when the squirrel went all Girl Interrupted on us for a minute -- but eventually he/she politely exited the shop via this awesome barricade we shoddily constructed:

OK, so you may be thinking: Squirrels climb power lines. What makes you think it would follow a low-lying path made out of vintage trunks and wire baskets? Well the answer to that question is that we weren't thinking. After calling Animal Control for tips (they were closed) and asking the non-emergency Jersey City Police line for assistance (they laughed at us) we had to figure out how to get the party crasher out in the least stressful manner (Beth was freaking out). So armed with two brooms, we stood behind the "barricade" and ushered our furry friend out. Honestly, Beth did most of the work. I was still laughing. As I grabbed for my camera again she shouted, "This is NOT a time for blogging!" Fine, fine.

The squirrel ran out of the store, looked back once and then jetted across traffic on Montgomery Street. We both screamed in earnest this time. He/she made it across safely, though, and some guy smoking a cigarette across the street looked at us like we were lunatics as we jumped up and down in front of the shop, high-fiving with the brooms held high in the air.

I never said I didn't have fun at work.

The change in seasons always makes me feel a bit nostalgic. It could also be that I was driving through a college campus this weekend, visiting my younger sister, but this weather makes me think of time spent in New Brunswick. I loved and hated those mornings walking to class. It was still early enough that the streets were clear and quiet, except for the rustle of leaves, and the sky is lit but grey, like someone tossed a towel over the sun. It was cold enough that my hands never really got warm and I dreaded having to take them out of my pockets to scribble notes. So I usually didn't. Days were spent flitting between classes, evenings playing rugby (this is the worse weather for it too, when the ground just starts to freeze and soft bodies ricochet off grass like it's concrete) and nights in humid basements listening to bands and drinking bad beer.

And all that was reminisced about to segue into a Jealous Sound song. I almost posted Anxious Arms, but I think the below is more on point. Hopefully I get some work done today and don't get stuck rifling through old Head Automatica and Jealous Sound songs. Either way ... enjoy.

Craft Class Roundup: Lace Jewelry

Last Thursday Kanibal Home hosted the delightfully talented Alison Charli Smith in the shop as she taught a two-part craft class on dip dying lace and jewelry-making. Some ladies got right to work, snipping lace and adding baubles, while others took their time - meticulously dying lace to craft at a later time. Whichever approach was used, everyone left with beautiful pieces of jewelry.

One of our customers summed it up last week with the following comment: "I keep coming back because you guys have tons of monogrammed items." Yea, we're crazy about initials. Maybe a little bit too much. (TMI side note: I have my initial tattooed on me ... you know, just in case I ever forget what my name starts with.)

So these new Scrabble letter mugs are a fun addition to our ever-growing stock of initialed items. The bottom of the mug even has the letter's value. For example, the G has "triple word score" written on the bottom in pink. Too cute and a perfect gift for that wordsmith friend or family member.

Also on Saturday: Kanibal Home hosts another kick ass sidewalk sale (the shop's biggest yet) with tons of unearthed treasures - vintage chairs, tables, curiosities, military items, jewelry, etc.

All weekend: Brick City Sound Riot takes over Newark for a three day music festival. Booze + Vendors + Music. Also the reunion of Rye Coalition. These kids went all out.

I'm so excited to share this special before + after today. Refurbished furniture is at the heart of Kanibal Home. It's how I started this company, teaching myself to upholster and sweating over damaged wood. So obviously I love a good transformation.

I'll be honest: I like my chairs like I like my men -- strong interior with a quirky exterior. This baby has great bones, but a bit of a busted exterior. Perfect for me, but probably scary to a regular buyer.

(Before. I saw this baby's beauty even though at this stage she was still an ugly duckling.)

(That's not my hairy arm, I promise. I was unloading the chair from my truck when I random dude on the street said, "Let me brush my fingers across that woodwork. Just lovely." I felt slightly violated, but let him cop a feel.)

And a few weeks and a lot of work later ... ta-da!! The after view:


(Oh yes I did. That's two-tone upholstering at its best -- the side panels have a grey menswear inspired fabric, while the front and back are adorned in that lady-like purple pattern.)

So she may have been a beast when I uncovered her, but look at this darling side chair now. She's gotten a makeover. It's like Pretty Woman. This streetwalker is ready to sit pretty in your living room and stun guests. Or something like that. Either way, it sure is a lovely change.

Well, today's inspiration is more of a WTF than anything else. But I still love it. I had to watch this promo video a few times to get over the extreme awkwardness of the models, but once I did I came away with this brain nugget: Even extremely successful brands know that it isn't good for business to always be serious. As a wise colleague once told me in public relations, "It's PR, not ER. Lighten up."

Live Music at Kanibal Home: Thursday at 8pm

This Thursday at 8pm Kanibal Home is hosting a special listening event for our friend and Jersey City neighbor, Amelia Hollander Ames. Many of you may have already had the pleasure of hearing this talented lady play the viola with Con Vivo, but tomorrow's performance will be structured fairly different.

For one, we're extending business hours in the shop so listeners can mill around, sip wine and enjoy the music during this intimate, salon-type event. Secondly, Amelia will be playing a cello suite by Bach and a solo viola piece by Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng. Lastly -- and this is big -- Amelia is the only violist in the world who plays this particular Bright Sheng piece, called The Flowing Brook. It was never published, but rather adapted after Sheng wrote it in 1988 into a longer work for piano and violin.

Please arrive on time and note that this will be a fairly short presentation, spanning no more than 30 minutes of music altogether. Standing room only.

I know some of you are clinging to the last moments of summer like Kate Winslet in Titanic, but I have to tell you that the end is near. Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoy the shirtless young bucks running by the shop as much as the next lass, but there's something about less skin that's oh so sexy. I'm talking about layering. And lots of it. Sweater vests, bow ties and pocket squares for boys and equally nerdy looks for the ladies (think: sheer skirts with minis underneath and tunics).

Upcoming Craft Class: DIY Flower Brooches + Hair Clips

You know what's my favorite part of the end of summer? It's not the BBQs, scorching heat or glorious sunsets (although those are pretty great too). It's the back-to-school and Fall fashion previews. I know it's pretty sick to even think about layering on clothing when we're all stripping down, but there's something to be said about accessorizing and blazers, scarves, bags and cardigans that gets me psyched for the cool weather.

So in honor of transitions, Kanibal Home is thrilled to offer a craft class dedicated to flower brooches and hair clips. Wear them now, give them as gifts or stick them on sweaters. The class will demonstrate how to make both felt and fabric pieces and each participant is guaranteed to make at least TWO (however you'll be encouraged to make more for friends and family).

Before + After: Ikat Chair

Ooo, I haven't done one of these posts in awhile! Long overdo.

BEFORE: I picked up the following chair in one of my many hunting expeditions last month. I'm always on the look-out for seating that's both functional and fun. More importantly, I'm looking for items with great bones. It doesn't need to be pretty or polished because that will come later.

This lovely lady was a perfect specimen. Around 100 years old with spindle legs and carved, delicate detailing, she was a little rough on the eyes when I first found her. The wood needed to be conditioned and a few supports needed to be fixed. Per the usual, all the fabric was gutted and the seat required some strengthening.

AFTER: But all the work was worth the final product, because -- cleaned up, conditioned and custom reupholstered -- she really is a pretty side chair. Plus how great is that ikat printed fabric? As soon as I saw it, I knew it needed to go on this chair. And, if I do say so myself, I think the final product is pretty stunning!

I have a feeling Judith Klausner's mom was the kind of parent who encouraged her to play with her food. I just applaud her self restraint -- I would have eaten all those cookies before they became art.

Ruminations on Work

At the shop, hidden behind rolls of ribbon next to my desk, is a torn piece of paper with a powerful quote:

"We should all do what, in the long run, gives us joy, even if it is only picking grapes or sorting the laundry." -- E.B. White, Letters of E.B. White

This particular scrap used to be in my bedroom, also next to my computer, in the early days of Kanibal Home when the store was only web-based. I'd come home from working a long day in public relations and sit down to eat (another meal) at my desk while I updated and toiled away on my pet project. Sometimes until two or three in the morning.

But it never quite felt like work. And I would often glance over at that quote and think, One day I'll be able to do this as an actual job. All day. I never thought it would really be possible. But, in the meantime, I'd keep this late night time to myself as my little bit of joy.

I now work upwards of 80 hours a week. It's not hard to believe that my friends and family roll their eyes (often and unabashedly) and aren't shy in exclaiming that I "work too much." But -- in the long run --if it gives me joy, then what's the sense in stopping or shortening or taking a break? I meet a lot of people in the shop that want to open their own business or become entrepreneurs of some sort. And, you can have all the talent in the world, but I honestly think that it comes down to this: Can you continue to find joy in your craft?

I glanced over at that quote this morning and thought: I know I do.

New Vendor: Nightingale Projects

It was no accident that Nightingale Projects is Kanibal Home's newest vendor. Nicole and Adam were introduced to me by a mutual Jersey City friend and I instantly fell in love with their quirky stories, attention to detail and professionalism. Plus, they're from Newark! (Both my mother and father grew up in Newark, so I'll always hold a special place in my heart for anything that comes from this city ... especially Portuguese food.)

This particular grouping of products is from their All American Picnic series. Doesn't it make you want to go out and have a picnic in Liberty State Park?

New Vendor: Ula Nice

One of the drawbacks to owning a shop is that I find it really hard to shop for myself. Either I feel guilty or -- after trolling for products and walking trade shows -- I'm just numb. So when I get so excited about something that I have to have it I know it's special.

In the case of Ula Nice's round skull pillows, I fell in love at the recent Not Yo Mama's craft fair. Rita from Rubella Jewelry and I were doing a quick walk around the show and we both became smitten. So smitten that we both walked away with a design. For one, Ula is a local Jersey City artist (which, by now, you know I love) and not only was this a skull print (which I also love), but each pillow is backed in a vintage fabric. Triple awesome. So not only did I have to have it for myself ... but I signed her up to be a new vendor in the shop too!

And the best part? These beauties are only $25!

Whoa, what a response! I posted a quick note about this Thursday's Sashiko class on the Kanibal Home Facebook page last week and we filled up in a matter of hours (we can possibly squeeze in one or two more people). I'm thrilled to introduce Daniella Lekach into the shop's craft class series and especially excited to create my very own custom embroidered tote and travel pouch!

Aww, You're Making Me Blush

Kanibal Home's customers and friends are the cutest. Seriously. I'm a lucky lady to constantly be surrounded by such talent. And it's such a compliment when someone sees something I've constructed in the shop and decided to put their own spin on it.

I'm sure many of you read about how last winter I grunted, cursed and bled while building the shop's wood wall. If you don't know what I'm talking about, here's a quick shot of what it looks like now:

Well one of Kanibal Home's frequent collaborators, Michelle Johnston, loved it so much that she decided (with the help of her boyfriend, Kevin Slack) to create something very similar in their living room. Check out their version:

Didn't they do such a great job? Even the cat seems to love it!
